Announcing the Sports Medicine Fellows for 2025-26

Punya Dahal, MD

I am originally from Pokhara, a picturesque town in Nepal located at the foothills of the Annapurna range in the Himalayas. I completed medical school in Kathmandu, Nepal, before moving to the United States for residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s/Roosevelt program in New York.

My professional goal is to specialize in sports medicine, which led me to pursue this fellowship after working as a hospitalist physician in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy staying active and exploring new sports. Soccer has always been a favorite, and I’ve recently taken up golf, pickleball, and snowboarding. I also love hiking, biking, trekking, and spending time outdoors

David Geurkink, MD

Originally from South Carolina, I grew up with a passion for the outdoors, often found with a baseball glove in one hand and a fishing rod in the other. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina, where I also met my wife, Anna. After completing medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, my medical journey brought me to Waco for residency in Family Medicine. I chose to continue my training here, pursuing a fellowship in Sports Medicine.

I am deeply committed to improving access to high-quality care in underserved communities, where specialized treatments are often limited. My professional interests include diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, minimally invasive office-based procedures, exercise physiology and biomechanics, and lifestyle medicine.

Outside of work, I enjoy mountain biking, fly fishing, rock climbing, running, and spending quality time with my family.
